Barrel Saunas Done Right
A barrel sauna is the fastest route to a real outdoor sauna. The curved shape means less air volume to heat than a square room of the same seating capacity, so a modest heater gets it to temperature quickly, and the staves shed rain without a separate roof. We supply and install cedar barrel saunas, and we assemble barrel kits clients have already bought. What separates a barrel that lasts twenty years from one that fails in five is almost entirely what happens underneath and around it: a level pad or footings that keep the cradles off wet ground, staves and bands checked and re-tightened after the first season, a properly flashed flue penetration on wood-fired units, and a buried electrical run in conduit rather than an extension cord across the lawn. We handle all of it, including the permit.
How We Work
From the first design consult to the first löyly, one project manager runs your build.
1. Siting, pad and permits
We check setbacks, drainage and sun, then build the base: a gravel and paver pad, a poured slab or concrete footings depending on the ground. The barrel has to sit dead level on its cradles or the door will bind and the bands will loosen unevenly.
2. Electrical or flue
For an electric barrel we trench and run the dedicated 240V circuit in conduit from the panel and terminate it in a weatherproof disconnect. For a wood-fired barrel we install the double-wall flue, the flashed roof penetration, the spark arrestor and the heat shielding, and pull the combustion permit.
3. Assembly, banding and first burn
Staves assembled, bands tensioned, benches and backrests fitted, door hung and adjusted, heater mounted and stones set. We run the curing burn, then come back after the first season to re-tension the bands once the wood has settled.
When You Need Barrel Saunas
A barrel sauna suits you when:
- The backyard is small. A four-person barrel occupies roughly the footprint of a garden shed and needs no separate roof structure.
- You want it soon. Once the pad and the power are in, a barrel goes up in two to four days, against several weeks for a built cabin.
- You like the look. Cedar staves and steel bands are a genuinely striking object in a garden, which a rectangular box is not.
- You want wood-fired. Barrels take a wood-burning stove beautifully, and outdoors is the only sensible place for one.
- You want fast heat-up. Less air volume than a square room of the same capacity means a smaller heater brings it up faster and cheaper.
- You already bought a kit. We assemble barrel kits from any brand and do the pad, the power and the permit around them.

What Affects the Cost of Barrel Saunas
Barrel pricing splits between the barrel itself and the site work. What moves it:
- Size. Four-foot two-person barrels at the bottom, six and seven-foot four to six-person barrels in the middle, longer barrels with a changing porch at the top.
- Wood and grade. Knotty western red cedar is the value option, clear-grade cedar and thermo-treated staves cost more and weather better.
- Heater. An electric heater keeps it simple. A wood-burning stove costs less to run but adds flue, flashing, shielding and a permit.
- Site work. A flat, well-drained yard needs a gravel and paver pad. A sloped or soft site needs footings or a poured slab.
- Electrical run length. Trenching from the panel to the far corner of a large lot is the item that most often surprises people.
- Extras. Panoramic glass end wall, changing porch, deck, exterior lighting and a rain canopy are all popular additions.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose the right sauna for a small backyard?
Work backwards from three constraints. First, setbacks: most Los Angeles jurisdictions require a few feet from the property line for a structure, which quietly rules out the corner most people had in mind. Second, the power run: the further the barrel sits from the panel, the more the trenching costs, so a spot closer to the house is usually cheaper. Third, seating: be honest about how many people will actually use it, because a four-person barrel is far cheaper to buy and to run than a six. For most small yards a six or seven-foot barrel with an electric heater on a paver pad is the sweet spot.
Does a barrel sauna need a foundation?
It needs a level, well-drained base, though not necessarily a poured foundation. On flat, firm ground a compacted gravel bed with pavers under each cradle works well and is what we build most often. On sloped, soft or poorly drained sites we pour footings or a slab. What you cannot do is set it straight on soil or grass, because the cradles will sink unevenly, the door will bind and the bands will loosen.
How long does a barrel sauna last outdoors in Los Angeles?
Fifteen to twenty-five years for a cedar barrel that stays off wet ground and gets its bands re-tensioned. Our climate is kind to them, though coastal salt air is harder on the steel bands and the heater than inland sites, so near the water we specify stainless hardware. Leaving it unsealed and letting it grey is perfectly fine structurally, and it is what most owners choose.
Can you assemble a barrel kit I already ordered?
Yes, and it is a good share of our barrel work. Send us the brand and model and where it is going. We inventory the shipment when it lands, flag anything missing early, build the pad, run the power, assemble to the manufacturer instructions so the warranty stays valid, and run the first burn.
Wood-fired or electric for a backyard barrel?
Electric if you want it on a timer and ready when you get home, and if trenching a circuit to the spot is straightforward. Wood-fired if you have somewhere dry to keep split wood, do not mind a 45-minute warm-up, and want the version with the fire in it. Wood-fired also avoids the electrical trench entirely, which on a large lot can make it the cheaper install.
