Outdoor Saunas Done Right
Outdoor is where a sauna becomes an event rather than an appliance. As an outdoor sauna builder we build detached cabin saunas, poolside rooms and lean-to builds against an existing wall, in cedar, thermo-treated pine and Nordic spruce. A backyard cabin sauna gives you space for a changing porch, a cold shower, a plunge tub and somewhere to sit outside afterwards, which is most of what makes the ritual worth doing. It also demands more of the build. Footings or a slab, framing and roofing, exterior cladding and flashing, weather sealing, a buried electrical run in conduit, and a building permit with a setback and sometimes a zoning check. A pool sauna adds its own considerations around the deck, the drainage and keeping chlorinated splash off the cedar. We handle the whole scope, including the AHJ.
How We Work
From the first design consult to the first löyly, one project manager runs your build.
1. Siting, survey and permits
We check setbacks, easements, overhead lines, drainage and sun, and settle where the building actually goes. Then we prepare and submit for the building permit, the electrical permit and, for wood-fired stoves, the combustion permit. Zoning review where the jurisdiction requires it.
2. Foundation, shell and services
Footings, piers or a poured slab depending on ground and slope. Framing, roof, exterior cladding and flashing. Closed-cell insulation and a continuous foil vapor barrier inside. Trenched conduit from the panel to a weatherproof disconnect, or the flue system for wood-fired builds.
3. Interior fit-out and handover
Cedar or spruce lining, benches and backrests, glass door and any picture windows, heater and stones, exterior lighting and the path or deck if it is in scope. Curing burn, temperature verification, and a maintenance schedule for the exterior finish.
When You Need Outdoor Saunas
Building outdoors is the right call when:
- You want the whole ritual. Hot room, cold shower or plunge, then sitting outside in the air. That sequence needs outdoor space and it is what people actually remember.
- There is no room indoors. When every interior square foot is spoken for, the yard is the answer.
- You want wood-fired. A wood-burning stove belongs outdoors, and outdoors is usually the only place a jurisdiction will permit one.
- You are building near the pool. A pool sauna turns an existing deck into a proper wellness area, and the plumbing and drainage are already close by.
- You want more than one room. Changing porch, shower alcove, plunge deck and storage are all easy outdoors and impossible in a converted closet.
- You want it to be a feature. A well-built cedar cabin at the end of a garden is a genuinely good-looking building, and it reads as an addition rather than a conversion.

What Affects the Cost of Outdoor Saunas
Outdoor builds cost more than indoor because you are building a small building. The drivers:
- Foundation type. A gravel and paver base on flat firm ground is the cheapest. Piers, footings and poured slabs cost progressively more, and slope decides which you need.
- Size and roof form. A simple shed roof over a single room is efficient. Gabled roofs, porches and multi-room layouts add framing and finish hours.
- Exterior cladding. Thermo-treated pine, cedar shiplap, shou sugi ban and metal all price differently and all weather differently.
- Electrical trenching. Distance from the panel to the building, and whether the route crosses hardscape, driveway or mature roots.
- Permits and zoning. Building permit is standard. Setback variances, hillside review and coastal overlays add time and cost, and we tell you early if your site triggers them.
- Site extras. Deck, path, exterior shower, plunge tub, lighting and a rain canopy are the additions that most often get added mid-project.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have a sauna in my backyard?
In almost every Los Angeles-area yard, yes, subject to setbacks and a permit. The usual constraints are how close the structure may sit to the property line, how much total accessory structure square footage the lot already has, and whether you are in a hillside, coastal or fire-hazard overlay with additional requirements. Detached accessory structures are common and routinely approved. We check your parcel before design starts so nobody finds out about a setback problem after the foundation is poured.
What permits are required for constructing an outdoor sauna?
Typically three. A building permit for the structure, its foundation and its roof. An electrical permit for the trenched circuit, the disconnect and the heater tie-in. And, if the heater burns wood, a mechanical or combustion permit for the flue, the clearances and the spark arrestor. Some jurisdictions add a zoning or planning review for accessory structures, and hillside or very-high fire hazard severity zones add their own conditions. We pull all of them and manage the inspections.
Does an outdoor sauna need a foundation?
It needs a base that keeps the structure level and off wet ground, and what that means depends on the site. Flat, firm, well-drained ground can take a compacted gravel and paver base. Slope, soft soil or poor drainage call for piers, footings or a slab. Permitted structures over a certain size generally need an engineered foundation regardless, which the plan check will specify.
How does an outdoor sauna hold up in the Los Angeles climate?
Well, with two caveats. Sun is the main enemy here rather than rain, and untreated cedar on a south or west elevation will grey and check faster than most people expect, so we either orient the building thoughtfully or specify a UV-resistant finish. Near the coast, salt air attacks fasteners, bands and heater elements, so we specify stainless hardware and a marine-grade heater on coastal sites.
Can you build the sauna next to my pool?
Yes, and it is one of our favourite scopes because the deck, the drainage and often the power are already in place. The details that matter are keeping chlorinated splash off the cedar, ensuring the deck drains away from the building rather than under it, and coordinating the electrical with the existing pool equipment circuit so nothing is shared. Pool barrier and gate requirements sometimes affect where the door can face, which we check at siting.
Sauna projects rarely stay in one lane.
