Custom Saunas Done Right
A custom sauna is built around your room instead of the other way around. As a custom sauna builder we start with the space you have, sloped ceiling, structural column, awkward alcove and all, and design a hot room that uses every inch of it. You pick the wood species, the bench geometry, the door and glass, the lighting and the heater. We build it on site out of solid tongue-and-groove stock: a cedar sauna for the classic aroma and colour, a hemlock sauna for a paler and more neutral room, Nordic spruce for a traditional Finnish look, or thermo-aspen and abachi for benches that stay cool to the touch. Nothing is a catalog part number. The bench height matches the people using it, the door swings the way the room wants, and the lighting is placed where it flatters the grain instead of glaring off it.
How We Work
From the first design consult to the first löyly, one project manager runs your build.
1. Measure, sketch and specify
We walk the space, take real measurements, and work through how you want to use the room: how many bathers, seated or reclined, wet or dry, and how often. That turns into a bench layout, a wood list, a heater size and a glass and door schedule you sign off on.
2. Build the shell
Framing, closed-cell insulation, foil vapor barrier, intake and exhaust vents and the dedicated 240V circuit go in first. This is the part nobody sees and the part that decides whether the room holds heat. Permits pulled and inspections passed before anything gets covered.
3. Finish carpentry on site
Paneling, benches, backrests, trim, door and hardware are cut and fitted in place by a finish carpenter, not assembled from a flat pack. Heater mounted, stones set, first curing burn run, and the room handed over with the accessories fitted.
When You Need Custom Saunas
Going custom instead of buying a kit makes sense when:
- The space is not a rectangle. Sloped ceilings, columns, plumbing chases, low headroom and odd corners are exactly where a kit stops working and a custom build starts.
- You want a specific wood. Clear-grade western red cedar, hemlock, Nordic spruce, thermo-aspen or abachi, and a bench material chosen separately from the wall material.
- The sauna is part of the room design. When it sits off a master bath, a gym or a pool deck, the finish, the glass and the lighting have to match everything around it.
- You want the bench right. Kit benches are one height. Custom benches get set to the ceiling height and the people using them, which is the difference between good löyly and a hot bench.
- You want a hybrid sauna. A traditional heater with infrared panels behind the backrests gives you both a dry sauna and a low-temperature session in one room. That combination is not sold as a kit.
- You are pairing it with water. A cedar hot tub, a cold plunge or an outdoor shower next to the sauna needs the deck, the drainage and the electrical planned as one project.

What Affects the Cost of Custom Saunas
Custom sauna pricing tracks size, materials and complexity more than anything else. What moves the number:
- Square footage and ceiling height. Volume drives the heater, the wood order and the labour all at once, so it is the single biggest factor.
- Wood selection. Clear-grade cedar costs more than knotty. Thermo-treated stock and abachi bench material sit above both. Mixing species costs less than you would expect and looks better than one wood everywhere.
- Glass and doors. A full-glass cedar-frame door is a signature detail. Picture windows and glass walls on outdoor builds are the premium end.
- Bench and backrest complexity. A single straight bench is quick. L-shaped and tiered layouts with floating supports and lit undersides take real carpentry hours.
- Heater and controls. Basic wall heaters at the bottom, floor-standing and air-circulation units in the middle, humidity-control and app-connected systems at the top.
- Structural work. Moving a wall, adding a beam, reinforcing a floor or upgrading the panel are quoted as separate line items so you can see exactly what they cost.
Every custom build gets a flat-rate quote after the design is signed off. Wood, heater, electrical and permits are inside that number.

What are the benefits of hiring a professional sauna builder?
Three things you cannot get from a DIY build. First, the shell: correct insulation, a continuous foil vapor barrier and properly sized intake and exhaust vents are what make a room hold 190 degrees efficiently, and they are all hidden behind the paneling where mistakes are expensive to fix. Second, the electrical: a licensed, permitted, correctly sized 240V circuit that will pass inspection and satisfy your insurer. Budget in four buckets. The shell, meaning framing, insulation, vapor barrier and venting. The interior, meaning paneling, benches, door and glass. On a typical indoor custom build the interior and the mechanical are the two largest, and the shell is where cutting corners costs you the most later. How much does it cost to hire a professional sauna builder in the US?
Nationally, professional sauna builds run from the price of a mid-range kitchen refresh at the small indoor end to a full room addition at the large outdoor end. Los Angeles sits above the national average, mostly because of permit costs, labour rates and the fact that a lot of local homes need panel work before a big heater is possible. We quote flat-rate rather than hourly, so the number you approve is the number you pay.
Which wood is best for a custom sauna?
Western red cedar is the default for good reason: it is dimensionally stable, naturally rot-resistant, low in resin and it smells like a sauna should. Hemlock is a good choice if you want a pale, neutral, almost odourless room. Nordic spruce reads as traditional Finnish. For benches specifically, thermo-aspen and African abachi are worth the upgrade because they stay noticeably cooler against skin. Most of our builds mix species, using cedar on the walls and abachi or thermo-aspen on the benches.
Can you match the sauna to the rest of my house?
Yes, and it is most of what makes a custom build worth doing. We match the door and window hardware to your existing finishes, run the exterior cladding to match your siding on outdoor builds, and select stain and trim on the outside face so the sauna reads as part of the room rather than an appliance dropped into it.
