Steam Saunas Done Right
A steam sauna runs at around 110 to 120 degrees with the air fully saturated, which feels hotter than a dry room even though the thermometer says otherwise. The build is closer to bathroom construction than to carpentry: a sealed and waterproofed enclosure, a sloped ceiling so condensate runs to the walls instead of dripping on your head, a floor drain, and a steam generator sized to the enclosure volume and the surface materials. We convert existing showers into steam showers and we build standalone steam rooms in tile, stone or acrylic. The generator lives in a nearby cabinet, attic or closet, not in the room, and needs a water feed, a drain line and a dedicated circuit. Los Angeles water is hard, so we specify auto-flush generators as a default and set up the descaling schedule at handover.
How We Work
From the first design consult to the first löyly, one project manager runs your build.
1. Enclosure survey and generator sizing
We measure the enclosure volume and note the surface materials, because stone, glass and exterior walls all add to the load a generator has to carry. We locate a home for the generator within pipe-run distance and confirm water, drain and circuit availability.
2. Waterproofing and rough-in
Full waterproof membrane on floor, walls and ceiling, a ceiling sloped roughly two inches per foot to shed condensate, a properly sloped floor drain, the steam line run with a continuous fall back to the generator, and the sealed vapour-proof enclosure closed up. Permits pulled for plumbing and electrical.
3. Finish, commission and handover
Tile or stone finish, steam head set low and away from the seat, door seal and sweep fitted, control head mounted outside the wet zone. We commission the generator, confirm it reaches temperature and holds it, and hand over the descaling routine.
When You Need Steam Saunas
A steam room or steam shower is the right call when:
- You want humidity rather than dry heat. Saturated air at 115 degrees is a completely different experience from a dry sauna at 190, and much easier on the airways.
- You already have a shower to convert. A tiled shower with a proper drain is most of the way there, and a steam shower conversion is one of the highest-value bathroom upgrades available.
- Space is genuinely tight. A steam enclosure can be as small as a shower stall, where a traditional sauna needs a room.
- You want it as part of the bathroom. Steam integrates into finished bathrooms in a way a cedar-lined hot room never quite does.
- Congestion and dry air bother you. Saturated warm air is the reason a lot of clients pick steam over a dry sauna.
- You want both. Pairing a steam shower with a dry sauna next door gives you the full contrast-therapy circuit, especially with a cold plunge in the loop.

What Affects the Cost of Steam Saunas
Steam pricing is driven by the enclosure and the plumbing more than by the generator itself. What sets it:
- Enclosure volume and materials. Stone and glass need considerably more generator output than acrylic for the same cubic footage.
- Waterproofing scope. An existing shower with sound waterproofing is a straightforward conversion. Rebuilding a failing pan and membrane is not.
- Generator size and features. Basic units at the bottom, auto-drain and auto-flush in the middle, and multi-user commercial units with aroma and chromotherapy at the top.
- Generator location. A short run to an adjacent closet is cheap. A long run to an attic or a garage adds pipe, insulation and labour.
- Ceiling and drainage work. Sloping a flat ceiling and correcting a poorly sloped floor drain are both real construction, and both are non-negotiable.
- Door and glass. A steam-rated door with a full perimeter seal costs more than a standard shower door and is what keeps the steam in.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a steam sauna and a steam shower?
Functionally very little. A steam shower is a shower enclosure that has been sealed, waterproofed to the ceiling and fitted with a steam generator, so it does both jobs. A dedicated steam room is built only for steam, usually with bench seating, no showerhead and a larger footprint. The construction requirements are the same: a sealed vapour-proof enclosure, a sloped ceiling and a floor drain.
How big a steam generator do I need?
Start with the cubic footage of the enclosure, then add for the surface materials. Acrylic and fibreglass need the least. Ceramic tile adds roughly a fifth. Natural stone, glass block and exterior walls can add half again or more, because they absorb heat and radiate it away. Undersizing is the most common mistake, and it shows up as a room that takes twenty minutes to build steam and never quite gets there. We calculate it rather than estimate it.
Can you convert my existing shower into a steam shower?
Usually yes, if the waterproofing is sound and there is somewhere within reasonable pipe distance for the generator. The work is sealing the enclosure to the ceiling, sloping the ceiling if it is flat, fitting a steam-rated door with a full seal, running the steam and drain lines, and adding the dedicated circuit. If the existing pan or membrane is suspect we rebuild it, because a leak behind a steam enclosure is a much bigger problem than a leak behind a shower.
How much maintenance does a steam generator need?
In Los Angeles, more than the manufacturer suggests, because our water is hard. An auto-flush generator handles most of it on its own and should still be descaled once or twice a year. A manual unit needs draining after heavy use and descaling quarterly. Scale build-up is the single biggest cause of premature generator failure, and it is entirely preventable.
Can I have a steam room and a dry sauna in the same space?
Yes, and it is a common request on larger projects. They have to be separate enclosures because the construction is completely different, one sealed and tiled, the other insulated and wood-lined. Placed side by side with a shower between them you get a proper contrast circuit, and adding a cold plunge completes it.
