Cold Plunge Install Done Right
A cold plunge only works if it is genuinely cold and genuinely convenient. Bags of ice each morning stop happening within about three weeks. A plunge with a properly sized chiller sits at whatever temperature you set it to, all year, and you use it because it is there and it is ready. We install insulated cedar, fibreglass and stainless plunges indoors and out, sized from a single-person tub to a bench-seat plunge for two, with 1 to 3 horsepower chillers, filtration, ozone and UV sanitation. Most of our plunges go in alongside a sauna, because hot then cold then rest is the whole point and it wants to be a few steps rather than a project. Where a sauna is already built we tie the plunge into the same deck, the same drainage and often the same electrical trench.

1. Sizing, siting and chiller selection
We work out the volume you want, the temperature you want to hold and where the plunge will sit, then size the chiller from that rather than from a brochure. Ambient temperature matters here: a plunge in full Los Angeles sun needs meaningfully more chiller than one in shade.
2. Base, drainage and electrical
Pad, deck reinforcement or interior subfloor work for the filled weight. Drainage that carries water away from the structure. A dedicated 240V circuit for the chiller, and a ventilated equipment location, because chillers reject heat and need somewhere to put it. Permits pulled.
3. Install, commission and handover
Tub set and levelled, chiller, filtration, ozone and UV plumbed and wired, insulated cover fitted. We run it down to temperature, verify recovery time between sessions and hand over the water care routine and the filter schedule.
When You Need Cold Plunge Install
A chilled plunge is the right call when:
- You are already done with ice. Buying ice daily is the reason most home cold-plunge habits end. A chiller removes the decision entirely.
- You have a sauna. Contrast therapy needs both ends. A plunge outside the sauna door is the difference between doing it occasionally and doing it every session.
- You train hard. Post-session cold immersion is the most common reason our clients install one, and consistency is what makes it worth having.

What Affects the Cost of Cold Plunge Install
Plunge pricing is driven by the tub, the chiller and the site. What sets it:
- Tub material. Fibreglass is the best value and the easiest to keep clean. Insulated cedar looks and feels the best. Stainless is the premium, most hygienic and the usual choice for commercial.
- Chiller capacity. A 1hp unit handles a single-person insulated tub in shade. Larger volumes, sun exposure and fast recovery between multiple users push you to 2 or 3hp.
- Insulation. A well-insulated tub with a fitted cover lets a smaller chiller do the job, which reduces both the equipment cost and the running cost.
- Indoor or outdoor. Indoors needs waterproof flooring, a drain and ventilation for the chiller heat. Outdoors needs a pad or a rated deck and weather protection for the equipment.
- Electrical run. Distance from the panel to the equipment location, and whether the route needs trenching.
- Sauna pairing. Installed with a sauna build, the permit, the trench and the deck are shared, which takes a real amount off the combined cost.

What should I look for when purchasing a backyard cold plunge?
Five things, roughly in order. Chiller capacity matched to your volume, your sun exposure and how many people will use it back to back, because an undersized chiller never quite holds temperature in summer. Real insulation in the tub walls and a fitted cover, which does more for running cost than any other single factor. Proper filtration with ozone or UV, so you are not draining it weekly. A drain and a base that can take the filled weight. And serviceable equipment with parts you can actually get, since a sealed unit with a proprietary chiller becomes scrap when it fails. Ask what horsepower is being proposed and why, and be sceptical of anyone who cannot answer.
How cold does it get and how long does it hold?

Do I need a permit for a cold plunge?
Usually an electrical permit for the chiller circuit, and often a building permit depending on the size, whether it is sunken and how it is supported. Outdoor installs sometimes need a setback check. We pull whatever the jurisdiction requires and coordinate the inspections.
Can a cold plunge go indoors?
Yes. It needs waterproof flooring with a drain or sump, a floor rated for the filled weight, and ventilation for the chiller, which rejects heat into whatever room it sits in. Garages, basements and mechanical rooms all work well. We waterproof and ventilate the space as part of the install.
